Tikkun Olam

This is one of my favorite Jewish beliefs - that we are created as little less than divine, and G-d intended for us to be co-creators. In being good stewards of the earth, we are expected to help heal it.

So the dilemma is the crushing sense of hopelessness that assail us sometimes. I want to/ have to be informed and this leave me open for all the misery of the world.

There are days I give myself the gift of no news. And I am much less informed than I was BC (before children). Still, issues that matter to me are depressing: global warming is accelerting, reproductive rights of women continue to be threatened, including lack of funding for birth control in 3rd world countries where famine, disease and AIDS are high risks. AIDS is devastating not only Africa, but our own black brethern here in this country. Bush and his Dementors are systematically gutting the government. Teen sexuality is rampant, along with drugs to avoid reality.

So where to start?

Being a natural optimist helps.
